At Toyota, the future isn’t just about car manufacturing. In our bid to put a stop to all traffic accidents, we’re looking at the whole picture. In short, how vehicle, people and environment interact. So where did we start? By going back to nature. It’s full of miracles: How can schools of fish swim so quickly without hitting one another? How do birds fly wherever they want without having to operate anything? One day we want cars to be like this. And from this inspiration, the i-unit was born. Using cutting-edge technology, such as an Intelligent Transport System (ITS), the i-unit has been developed as an anti-collision car. ITS gives the i-unit the ability to be aware of what’s happening around it and the whereabouts of other i-units. When we launched the i-unit in 2005, we demonstrated the potential of ITS by showing 12 i-units intersecting with distances of only tens of centimetres separating them. In 2,555 shows, there wasn’t a single collision.
With the development of this ITS, we will be able to reduce traffic accidents and even traffic congestion, which in turn will lead to a reduction in environmental impact.
